The last festival of the season around here was this
past weekend in Murray, KY. I went up Friday night for
the Western Kentucky Regional Fiddle Fest held at Murray
State University in Lovett Auditorium. This was the
first year for this new festival and while the
attendance was a little low, it has the potential to
become a major festival because it's held at a time of
the year when there's not much else going on. With the
help of Rob Pearcy on rhythm guitar I was able to win
the dobro category.

We were in Athens, AL Friday for the Tennessee
Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention held on the grounds
of Athens University. We had been in Panama City Beach,
FL the previous few days for fall break and traveled
from there up to Athens that Friday morning. We left 90
degree weather in PCB and by the time we got to Athens
we had to put on long sleeves and jackets. There were
eleven contestants in the reso competition and with the
excellent back-up work of Ray and Joe on guitar and
bass, I was able to pull out a first place win.

This past weekend we were at the 29th annual Uncle
Dave Macon Days right here in Murfreesboro. It was
nice not having to travel a long distance this time.
Just across town to Cannonsburg Pioneer Village. The
reso-guitar competition was the last event on the roster
for Friday night. It was about 10:00 pm before it
finally got started. Joe Holloway had been out of town
on vacation for the past two weeks so it was good to
have him back with me and Ray. With Joe and Ray's
fantastic help on guitar and bass I was able to win
first place. We finally left that night about midnight
just in time to go home and catch a quick nap before
coming back all day on Saturday.
Sunday, July 2nd, 2006:
We were at the 35th annual Smithville Fiddlers Jamboree this
weekend in Smithville, TN. It's been several years since
I've been to the Jamboree and I remember that it always
seemed to be the hottest weekend of the festival season.
This weekend proved to be no different. Shady spots were
at a premium all around the square. I entered in the dobro guitar competition Friday, and with Ray Lane's
help on rhythm guitar I was able to pull out a 1st place
win. Hope you all have a safe and happy 4th of July!

Well, this has been a busy month already. Over the
Memorial Day weekend I stopped by noted reso-luthier
Butch Hodgkins' home in Allardt, TN. I was able to
acquire Butch's latest work of art. It's Hodgkins
Resonator Guitar #72 made from 500+ year old maple.
Butch said that the guy he got the wood from had bought
an old maple log and when he started cutting it in his
mill he attempted to count the growth rings. He said
that he gave up after 500. Last weekend, on the 2nd and
3rd, we traveled to Red Boiling Springs, TN for the
Donoho Hotel Bluegrass Festival. We spent Friday night
in the historic Donoho Hotel. I was able to win the reso-guitar
competition and Ray Lane took 2nd place. This past
Saturday we were in Dickson, TN for the Arthur
Smith-Robert Spicer Memorial Fiddlers Contest. Again, I
was able to place first while Ray came in second. Our
good friend Rob Pearcy of Smyrna, TN claimed third.

We
were in Cookeville, TN yesterday for the 7th Annual
Railroad Rendezvous Springfest. This is also the site of
the Dobros At The Depot Bluegrass Festival which hosts
the Tennessee State Resonator Guitar Championship. With
the accompanying help of Ray Lane on guitar and Joe
Holloway on bass, I was able to claim the state
championship for the year 2006. This was the 2nd annual
state championship and I am honored to join the winners
roster along with Johnny Bellar (2005 National Resonator
Guitar Champion) who won the 1st annual state
championship in 2005.

We
traveled
down to Holladay, TN yesterday for the 50th
Annual Old Time Fiddlers & Bluegrass Jamboree. The reso-guitar
competition was the third event that afternoon and I was
able to pull out a 2nd place win. Johnny Bellar of
Ashland City, TN won 1st place while Rob Pearcy of
Smyrna, TN took 3rd place. As always, a big thanks to
Ray Lane and Joe Holloway for accompanying me on guitar
and bass. Check the

couple of new pics from Holladay. Now it's time to start preparing for the
Tennessee State Resonator Guitar Championship next
month.

It was an exciting weekend in Clarksville, TN at the
Tennessee Old Time Fiddlers Championships. I'm proud to
announce that I won 1st place in the reso-guitar
competition. A big thanks to Ray Lane and Joe Holloway
for accompanying me on guitar and bass. Speaking of Ray,
he wound up placing 3rd in the reso category. My good
friend Rob Pearcy of Smyrna, TN took 2nd place. My
daughter, Rachel, placed 3rd in the Pee Wee Dancing
category. She has been learning to clog since last
November and this was her first competition!

Whew! Finally got this new website up and running! I'd like to send a
big thanks to Ray & Ernestine Lane for doing the photo shoot and taking
the photos for the website. They turned out even better than I had
hoped. Great job guys!
Just finished a practice session today with Ray Lane and Joe
Holloway. I'm getting ready for the resonator guitar competition at the
Tennessee Old TIme Fiddlers Championships held in Clarksville, TN on
March 24-25, 2006. The reso-guitar category will be Friday night the
24th at 7:00 pm. Ray and Joe will be backing me up on guitar and bass.
